The vulnerability of ATM security continues unabated after an Absa ATM was blown up and an undisclosed amount of money stolen in Mpumalanga yesterday .

Villagers in Marapyane in the KwaMhlanga area, who came to withdraw money yesterday morning, could not believe their eyes when they found the only ATM in the village had been reduced to a pile of rubble.

The ATM was situated in the yard of Katale Supermarket, which operates around the clock.

Police spokesman, Constable Hastings Chaane, said the ATM was bombed at about 2am.

"Three men arrived at the supermarket and bombed the machine before getting away with an undisclosed amount of money," Chaane said.

He said no one had been arrested and that police investigations were continuing.

"We appeal to anyone with information to come forward."

The incident occurs at a time when ATM security in South Africa is seen as vulnerable, with financial institutions being targeted in a spate of attacks in townships in recent months.
