Your article "Pupils drown in pit toilet" on January 14 refers. The Hlalakhle Primary School toilet disaster which left two pupils dead and six others injured and traumatised, re-emphasises the DA's call on government to establish a dedicated public works unit in the education department.

The preventable disaster brought the pupils face-to-face with the reality of the department's inability to deliver services. It could have been avoided if better communication and planning existed between the two departments.

Over the past year, these two departments have repeatedly blamed each other for the non-delivery and development of school infrastructure. This incident once again shows that the education department is not able to deliver proper flushing toilets to the pupils of Mpumalanga.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and teachers of the deceased and injured pupils, and wish them well during this difficult period.

Anthony Benadie, Mpumalanga
