The Bible teaches all Christians that behind everything they do, say, achieve and become, stands God.
Therefore it did not come as a surprise yesterday when members of the KwaThema Central Methodist Church in Springs put aside their differences to participate in the 2008 Covenant Service. The service was celebrated with spiritual vigour, oneness, song and love among more than 2000 worshippers.
Last year at the same church, the resident priest Smadz Matsepe survived congregational revolt when about 70 of his church members accused him of turning his back on the traditional African Methodist style of worship in favour of the charismatic way of worshipping.
But yesterday as early as 7.30 am, it was the likeable Matsepe who was in command. From the onset it was evident that the covenant that Matsepe and his congregation had made with God, was beyond human reproach.
Matsepe told those present that present-day churches were full of people who grumbled a lot.
"Sometimes in our churches people persecute the men of God and because of the actions people take today, the curse will be with us for generations to come," Matsepe said.
Reading from Exodus 17: 8-16, Matsepe said when the Amalekites attacked the children of Israel, they had not reckoned that God would be on their side.
"As the leader of this mighty kingdom of worshippers, like Moses, I need the Aarons and the Hurs to assist me. I need people who will sustain me when my hands tire."
The Bible says as long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites prevailed against the Amalekites. But as soon as his hands were lowered, the Amalekites gained the upper hand in the battle. He said it was only after Aaron and Hur had put a stone under Moses and held his hands up that Joshua and his warriors overcame the Amalekites.
The day ended on a high note when members received Holy Communion.
