Over the next eight years many homeowners will find themselves buying small petrol-powered generators capable of producing between 5KW and 10KW to power a few lights and small appliances.

Large buildings might use millions of watts of power, or megawatts. Eskom's power stations produce between 100MW and 5000MW.
