Jailed former Vlakplaas hit-squad commander Eugene de Kock has been admitted to a Pretoria hospital for an old shoulder problem.

De Kock was arrested in 1994 and sentenced to more than 200 years for a string of crimes, including the brutal murder of political activists during the apartheid era.

The first prisoner to be locked up in the Pretoria Maximum Prison's C-Max section, he was admitted to the Pretoria Academic Hospital on Friday under heavy guard by prison warders.

Correctional Services spokesman Simphiwe Kondleka could only confirm that he was in hospital and that he was admitted on Friday. He would not discuss the medical problem, saying it would infringe De Kock's rights.

Hospital spokesman Freda Kobo confirmed that De Kock had been admitted but declined to divulge details.

Sources tell Sowetan that De Kock will undergo surgery on his shoulder this week.
