Members of the Cusian Church in Zola, Soweto, yesterday set aside their Sunday suits and dresses and wore their old school uniforms to church.
The congregation was launching their back-to-school campaign and were also on a drive to raise funds.
Members of the congregation, young and old, wore their uniforms.
Church leader Nhlanhla Mazibuko said the campaign was not only about getting young people back to school but older people as well.
He said the church was in a community riddled with crime and poverty. He said the campaign was community-based and they wanted to use education to introduce people to religion.
Mazibuko said the church also wanted to be more involved in community affairs by coming up with projects to eradicate crime.
"We want children in the church to be exemplary when they go to school.We want them be different from others," Mazibuko said.
He said stories about pupils going to malls instead of school were disturbing and they were working towards 100percent school attendance.
He said the campaign also wanted to promote libraries and not movies.
"We want pupils to go to libraries on Saturdays and not movies," he said. "They should also know that the church is available if they want to use it for their studies."
