Entries are invited for the Johannesburg Literary Festival.
The festival, known as JoLiFe, seeks to celebrate and promote literature and past and present literary icons while also advancing literary excellence and national identity.
Its pioneers are the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services public relations and event management group wRite Associates, and Sowetan is the media sponsor. The closing date is January 31 and the awards ceremony is due to be held in Johannesburg in March.
While asking Johannesburg residents - especially the youth - to test their creativity and literary talent in all our official languages, the festival also seeks to become a major source of celebration and critical appraisal of African, South African and in particular Johannesburg writers.
It also seeks to highlight the role played by Public Libraries in making literature more accessible to communities and to promote literature in the country's indigenous languages
The 2007-08 edition of JoLiFe celebrates and commemorates the life and death of black consciousness icon, Bantubonke Stephen Biko under the competition theme: Pride in Yourself.
Inspired by the life and philosophy of Biko, the theme is intended to reflect the positive belief young people have in themselves and the principles for which they stand. The competition encourages them to have and to exhibit a positive and inspiring consciousness.
