Parents, society must control ruinous youth

I was very disturbed by the Sowetan on January 15 regarding school children bunking school to indulge in sexual activities in a mall toilet. I guess these pupils see their future in toilets rather than in classrooms.

I believe parents and the community are to blame because parents spend most of the time watching soapies, drinking or working. And the community does not report pupils who gallivant in the streets during school hours.

Another concern is jukebox places in the townships. Yesterday I visited a friend in Meadowlands, Zone 5. What I saw there was a disgrace. There is a jukebox place situated a couple of blocks away from the legendary DJ Ganyani's house.

Between 6pm and 8pm, the place was packed to capacity, with some of the youth drinking, smoking and playing games. I asked myself, where are the parents of these poor children?

Schools have just reopened and I'm certain that some of those children have failed, but they were drinking and smoking their future away.

The youth must remember the Class of 1976, who fought tooth and nail for all of us to have a better education.

Could someone kindly go and shut down those jukeboxes which are destroying our youth. I'd like to congratulate the community of Kagiso on the West Rand for closing the jukebox places in that area.
