When the Kgoroeadira family went to bed on Saturday night, they did not know death was stalking them. And they had no reason to think about death because they were all fit.
But like a thief, death visited them in the dead of night, and by the time the sun rose on Sunday, the head of the family - husband, father and hardworking colleague - Seatholo Joel Kgoroeadira was no more. A heart attack had claimed the life of this lovable and dedicated family man.
His wife Mabontle and teenage daughter Keabetswe have since Sunday been comforted by family and friends following Kgoroeadira's sudden death, just two months before his 52nd birthday.
This week his sister, Snoekie Masango, paid a moving tribute to a brother she described as a man with "a big heart and very caring. He loved his family, community and colleagues".
An executive producer of Sotho News at the SABC, Kgoro, as he was affectionately known, was born on March 2 1956. He spent most of his childhood days playing in the dusty streets of Dube, Soweto.
He started school in Dube and matriculated at Orlando West High School. He then graduated at the University of the North with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983.
He also read for a diploma in personnel management through Unisa. In 1983 he joined the SABC news department briefly before he was offered a job as a manager at a mine in Welkom.
In 1989 he rejoined the SABC, serving in various roles until 1999 when he was promoted to executive producer of Sotho television news, a post he held until his death.
Masango remembered how "respectful, caring and loving was Kgoro. He was a jewel in our lives, a person who you could trust, a person who put everyone before himself".
A member of the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Orlando West since his youth as an alter boy, he also sang in the church choir as well as the SABC choir.
Kgoroeadira married Mabontle in 1996 and they have a 16-year-old daughter Keabetswe. He is survived by his wife, daughter and four siblings.
Kgoroeadira will be buried at Kromvlei Cemetery in Alberton tomorrow. The funeral service will take place at Holy Cross Church in Orlando West from 8am.
