A security guard at Eskom in Mpumalanga and two other men were arrested after being found in possession of copper cables worth about R30000.

Tonga police received a tip-off that three men were cutting the copper cables into smaller portions at a house in KaMhlushwa, near Komatipoort, when they pounced.

"We rushed to the scene and caught the suspects in the act," said Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi yesterday.

"We arrested them immediately and they are scheduled to appear before the local magistrate's court tomorrow."

Police suspect the two men arranged with the security guard to allow them to steal the copper wires at the KaMhlushwa power station with a view to selling them.

"Theft of copper wires is problematic in this area because criminals believe that it is a rural area and they can do as they wish," said Nyambi.
