A quick decision by the Limpopo department of health and social development has resulted in the suspension of an employee at Botlokwa Hospital, outside Polokwane.

Selaelo Leshabane, who worked as a driver at the hospital, was arrested at the weekend for allegedly stealing diesel from the hospital's tank.

He is out on R500 bail and has also been suspended by the hospital.

Department of health spokesman Phuti Seloba confirmed that Leshabane was yesterday suspended with immediate effect and with full pay.

"We were forced to act quickly in issuing a suspension letter to him because he was caught red-handed stealing from the department," said Seloba.

He said security guards at the hospital found Leshabane pumping diesel from the hospital's tank and informed the police.

"At the time he was surprised, Leshabane had already filled one 20 litre container and was in the process of filling another.

"Stealing is a criminal offence. Now if a person steals from his employer, it means that person is not going to be trusted anymore.

"We are also worried that other employees could emulate him and steal more properties from health institutions in the province. Doing so would put us in a bad financial situation," Seloba said.
