Special girl comes of age

Mpho Mathibela, the darling of Matlosana, Klerksdorp, in North West, was at her happiest at the last of a series of functions marking her 21st birthday recently.

Mpho is the surviving half of the famous Mpho and Mphonyana twins who were joined by their heads at birth in 1986.

Their plight gripped the imagination of South Africa and the rest of the world.

Thousands prayed for the success of the operation in 1989 to separate them. They survived, but, sadly, Mphonyana died the following year.

Prayer services were held at the Mathibela home in Joubertina and at Mphonyana's grave and then a special banquet was hosted by Matlosana mayor China Dodovu and his wife, Madimabe.

A few days later Mpho enjoyed a gigantic cake with several hundred other children at a community hall in Joubertina . She also handed out festive season goodies to the children .

All these events were organised by the mayoress and a special organising committee led by community leaders.

The committee plans to hold a yearly party for the vulnerable children of Matlosana, with Mpho's birthday as the event's central theme, which is a reminder that, in the eyes of God, all children are beautiful, and special. - Victor Mecoamere
