Lions manager Peter Maimane believes the team has got enough depth to replace flyhalf Andre Pretorius, who was ruled out of the coming Super 14 competition because of injury.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday from their training session in Randburg, Maimane said he was pinning his team's hopes on full-back Earl Rose, utility back Jaco van Schalkwyk, flyhalf Louis Strydom and new recruit Michael Killain.

All the players have the potential to replace the injured Pretorius, who is likely to be back in time for the Currie Cup billed for June.

Springbok flyhalf Pretorius underwent surgery last month after picking up a foot injury when the IRB World Cup winners played Wales in Cardiff at the end of the year.

Flyhalf Killian, who joined the Doornfontein side earlier this month from the Elephants in Eastern Cape, has been impressive at training.

"We have conducted the best preparations so far and the boys are looking forward to our warmup games later this month,'' said Maimane.

The Lions will face Super 14 champions the Bulls in a friendly in Johannesburg on January 31 and in Namibia on February 2.
