Some racial attacks since 2000:

2000:

Piet Odendaal ties Mosoko John Rampuru to the back of a bakkie and drags him for 5km to his death in the Free State town of Sasolburg.

Odendaal was found guilty of culpable homicide in the Bloemfontein high court and sentenced to 10 years in prison, of which three were suspended conditionally for four years.

2004:

Mark Scott-Crossley and two employees hack Nelson Chisale with pangas before throwing him into a lion's enclosure while he was still alive.

Scott-Crossley was found guilty together with Simon Mathebula and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Richard Mathebula, another accused, died during the trial. Last year there was a bid to get Scott-Crossley out of prison.

2005:

Zimbabwean Jealous Dube, who used to work at Ranchero farm in Musina, was shot and killed by farmer Jewell Crossberg. He said he mistook him for a baboon. But Dube's fellow workers painted a picture of a racist attack.
