The incident in which eight Mpumalanga schoolchildren fell into a pit toilet - and two of them drowned - begs for an urgent provincial education department inquiry.

The floor gave way under their collective weight.

Just how a pit toilet with structural flaws was approved is a mystery that must be unravelled by an inquiry. Not only the builder should be held responsible for the mess but also the building inspectors.

Worse, the department must still explain why it budgeted for the construction of a dated pit-toilet system instead of a modern amenity with a water-borne sewerage system.

Official talk of revolutionising our education system cannot be treated seriously when schools still have to battle to access basic amenities.
