A Mokopane woman is demanding that a Cape Town MP, Maxin Mpowele Swethe, who fathered her two children aged 12 years and six months, pay almost R9600 a month in maintenance.
Swethe had allegedly failed to support his children since September last year.
The mother of his two children, Anna Kekana, 31, filed a charge of failure to pay maintenance with the Mokopane magistrate's court last week. Swethe failed to appear in court yesterday and the matter was postponed to February 1.
Swethe fathered the two children, Solly Kekana, 12, and Kgadi, 6-months-old, in 1995 and this year, respectively.
Kekana said yesterday she wanted R4800 for each child - nothing less.
The two lovebirds had been together for the past 12 years and had at one stage planned to have a traditional wedding.
But the romance went sour in September last year when Swethe dropped a bombshell and married a Polokwane advocate known only as Tebsa.
Matters came to a head when the new couple were seen cruising in a luxurious Mercedes-Benz in the small town of Mokopane a few days before their wedding.
"Since their wedding in September, he has stopped taking care of the children.
"I spent a lonely Christmas and New Year thinking about the future of my kids and not knowing where their next meal would come from," said Kekana at the maintenance court yesterday.
"This is not a war. I just want to remind Swethe of his responsibilities now that he seems to have forgotten them. He was like a Brahman when he fathered them, but now he is running away from the children as if they do not exist," she said.
The unemployed Kekana who is living from hand-to-mouth said she had no money to take her first-born to school.
"Things are very expensive. As a single mother, I need enough money to give my son a good education. He [Swethe] had a good education when he was still a child and so should his children," she said.
Contacted for comment, Swethe admitted that he has two children with Kekana. He however poured cold water on Kekana's claims that he was failing to support the children.
"I gave Kekana R700 for my son's education last week and I always give her money for the children every time she calls. I am baffled by her claims and I believe there is more to this than meets the eye," he said.
But the latest bank balance enquiry made by Kekana last week proved otherwise.
Only R32 was available in the account.
