Four people walking to work died when a tow truck lost control and plunged into them yesterday morning.
The accident happened on the N2 north freeway between Umhlanga and Sibaya Casino off-ramps in Durban.
Three of the pedestrians died instantly while the fourth died on his way to the hospital.
The dead, two women and two men, were on the side-walk of the freeway when the accident occurred.
Police said yesterday that the four would not be named until their next of kin were informed. They were still trying to establish their places of work.
Paramedics and police were at the scene of the accident minutes after it happened.
A Netcare 911 spokesman at the scene, Chris Botha, said the driver of the tow truck allegedly lost control of his truck before it overturned.
He said the deceased were using the pathway alongside the highway when the tow truck lost control and plunged into them. He described the accident as one of the worst ever.
"Even our paramedics who rushed to the scene were not prepared for what they were about to witness," he said.
He said bodies were scattered all over the scene, with blood splashed all over the road.
On arrival at the scene paramedics found that three of the victims had already died.
Botha said paramedics worked relentlessly to stabilise the fourth victim who was still alive but died on his way to the hospital.
The truck driver, who was in a stable condition, was rushed to the nearest hospital.
Police spokesman Michael Read said a case of culpable homicide and negligent driving had been opened against the driver.
