A supermarket was robbed in West Street, Pietermaritzburg, at 8.45am on Saturday, police said yesterday.

Six men, one of whom was armed, entered the store and held up staff at gunpoint. Staff were then ordered to go to the back of the shop and forced to lie down, said police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram. The men ransacked the shop and fled with R10000 in cash and R7000 worth of airtime, said Budhram.

During the robbery an employee activated the panic button summoning the security company.

When the security officer arrived, one of the men confronted him, taking his firearm and cellphone.

The robbers then fled on foot, no shots were fired and no one was injured.

No arrests have been made, police said. - Sapa
