KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a young mother who allegedly strangled her 3-year-old toddler after she discovered she was pregnant again.

Police said the 20-year-old woman from Gagane in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, killed her son, stuffed his body into a refuse bag and dumped it in a rubbish bin.

She has confessed to watching the refuse truck take the wastebin away to crush the contents.

The woman was arrested on Wednesday, but the incident happened early in November when she had found out that she was pregnant for the second time.

Police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela said the woman's parents, neighbours and friends started to suspect something was wrong after the child was not seen for about two months.

"She refused to tell her parents anything," he said.

"But she later confessed to a friend that she had killed the baby after realising she was pregnant. She was advised by her friend to report the matter to the police," said Magudulela.

He said the woman was taken into police custody after she made the confession yesterday.

"She told police that she threw away the bag containing her dead child before it was taken by the refuse truck to a dumping zone," Magudulela. said.

"We are investigating a case of murder. Police are now faced with the challenge of finding the remains of the child in the local dumping site," he said.

Magudulela said police will begin the search for the child's body soon.
