Initiative to visit schools

A delegation from the education department in Limpopo led by MEC Aaron Motsoaledi will conduct surprise visits to schools that performed poorly last year.

The delegation would be accompanied by circuit managers from different offices in Limpopo.

Motsoaledi would talk to pupils and teachers in the affected schools about the importance of practising the philosophy of the 5-Ps, which means proper preparations prevent poor performance.

Departmental spokesman Ndo Mangala said the visit to schools was part of an annual programme by the department to reinforce the culture of learning among pupils.

"It is a departmental belief that learning in Limpopo starts on reopening day. Therefore, teachers must start teaching and managers start managing their schools," said Mangala.

He said Motsoaledi would also plead with the parents and the school governing bodies to take part in the education of their children.

This, he said, would help bring back the culture of learning in schools.

"If parents are involved, the pass rate of our matriculants would increase dramatically each year.

"We as the department believe that a disciplined child at home turns out to be a dedicated pupil in class resulting in good performance at the end of the year," said Mangala.

He added that the department would also make unannounced visits to schools that performed well last year.

Mangala said the department would encourage pupils to study even harder and work with their teachers.

"We will also advise students to choose the right stream of subjects so that they become employable after passing matric or graduating from tertiary institutions.

"Our aim is to improve in maths and science subjects in a bid to fight the shortage of scientists and mathematicians."
