A 48-year-old man is expected to appear in court today for allegedly killing his wife, 37.

The woman died on New Year's eve after an argument with her husband.

Police said the man beat his wife to death before secretly burying her in a shallow grave in their garden in Ngwavuma, KwaZulu-Natal last week.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the couple had celebrated New Year's eve by drinking.

He said they got into an argument later during the night which resulted in the man assaulting the woman.

He then dug a shallow grave near the house and buried the body to conceal the fact.

"The suspect went to a local priest where he confessed to assaulting his wife and burying her in the garden.

"The priest called the police and on their arrival, the suspect pointed out the spot where he had buried his wife," said Mdletshe.

He said that while police were inspecting the scene, the suspect fled.

"Police fired shots in the air to stop him. He kept running until police shot him in the leg and arrested him," said Mdletshe.

"He was taken to hospital where he was kept under police guard."

Mdletshe said the man was in a satisfactory condition. After his release from hospital, the suspect was taken into police custody until his first court appearance today.
