Friends, family, fellow bikers and former colleagues gathered at the SABC yesterday to pay tribute to television actor and budding biker Anton Summerton, who died in a bike accident in Roodepoort on Saturday.
Among those who attended the emotional memorial service were actor, TV producer and dedicated biker Neo Motsunyane, comedians Kagiso Lediga and David Kau.
Speaking to Sowetan, Motsunyane, who, like the other bikers, were in grief over the death of their friend, said it was puzzling how the accident happened because it did not occur very far from a stop sign.
"This means that he could not have been travelling at a high speed. We actually do not know at this stage whether a car was also involved in this gruesome accident as we can only speculate.
"However, I would want to appeal to drivers to try and understand that they are sharing the roads with bikers. Increasingly, many people are taking into biking as there are just too many cars on our roads. A distance that used to take you 20 minutes now takes you 45 minutes, and there are 1000 cars being registered in Johannesburg every day," he said.
Motsunyane, who is currently starring in the SABC2 drama series Usindiso, added that he, together with fellow biker and TV presenter Sydney Matlhaku, had biked with Summerton to Magaliesburg two weeks ago.
"What we know is that Anton bought this bike about a month ago. Before that he was using a smaller bike."
He said that the increase in fatal accidents involving bikers was a concern to the biking community.
"I have so far lost four biking friends, including Anton. However, as bikers we will continue biking as this is our lifestyle. We are currently working out the framework of a campaign with the Johannesburg Metro police to educate drivers on how to share the roads with bikers.
Summerton's funeral will be in Cape Town on January 12.
