Mpumalanga police arrested a 71-year-old pensioner on New Year's Day for allegedly failing to pay maintenance for his 18-year-old son.

Police said the pensioner had skipped paying R200 a month for his son. His wife had laid charges against him.

He is still living with his wife and son at Dludluma Trust near Komatipoort, but the woman told police that he always bought liquor with the money he was supposed to support their son.

Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi confirmed the arrest. He told Sowetan that the suspect was expected to appear in the local magistrate's court soon.
