The Inanda matric pupil who was shot and wounded by her stepfather a day before the official announcement of the results is recuperating in hospital.
Hlengiwe Msomi, 17, remains in a stable condition after being shot in the chest. Her family was concerned that she would not be able to pursue her dream of becoming a social worker.
The girl's mother, grandmother and cousin were shot dead by her stepfather after an argument at the family home last Thursday.
Two others were injured including a cousin and her (the cousin's) six-month-old baby. The baby girl is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of a Durban hospital.
"Hlengiwe is obviously happy that she passed her matric but is also very sad about the deaths of her family members. She is also concerned about who will now finance her studies as her mother was the family breadwinner," said family spokesman Sifiso Dlamini.
Msomi's stepfather Wiseman Mqadi shot members of his family after an argument with her mother. He fled the scene after the shooting.
He was found dead a few hours later near a river in the area. He had allegedly used the murder weapon to commit suicide.
Most of the survivors are on the mend except the baby who remains in a critical condition.
Hlengiwe, a pupil at Mthwalume High School on the south coast, heard from her hospital bed that she had passed.
Dlamini told Sowetan that the family was praying for the speedy and full recovery of all the victims, especially the baby.
He said with the help of a social worker, they were able to relay the news of the deaths to Hlengiwe and her cousin.
The community of Inanda is still shaken by the incident which has been described as one of the most gruesome in the area.
Dlamini said instead of celebrating the New Year, his family was in deep mourning and had suffered a great loss in the last days of 2007.
