New year celebrations ended tragically at GaSeema village outside Polokwane when a man was shot dead.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said a man was driving his car when he came across a group of people celebrating the new year.

Ramatseba said the man then decided to drive slowly in order to allow the celebrations to continue unhindered. In the process, one of the revellers grabbed the man's car keys and removed them from the ignition.

When the 28-year-old man got out of the car to demand his keys, a fight broke out and everybody joined in the fracas and assaulted the car owner, said Ramatseba.

The man ran to his car, grabbed his licensed firearm and shot one of the people in the stomach. The victim, who has been identified as Michael Monyamane, also 28, died on the spot.

"We acted swiftly to rescue the driver from the angry villagers," he said.

The driver was taken to nearby WF Knobel Hospital where he was treated and discharged. He is being held at Matlala police station. His firearm has been confiscated. He is expected to appear in the Matlala periodical court today on a murder charge.
