More youth will join unemployed

The worst thing about the poor matric results is that those who failed face a bleak future. Less than 10percent of matriculants in Eastern Cape achieved university exemption, and more than 30000 failed. Except for a tiny handful, all these youngsters will have to fork out money for matric again, get a menial job or rot at home.

Pupils and administrators are not to blame, teachers are to blame. The lack of political will of the ANC is the root cause of the chaos. The poor are pushed into no-fee schools lest they deprive better-off families of resources.

Parents know that learning in English is the best way to secure a job and is essential for getting a better job. Home languages mean upward mobility for a few and misery for the rest. Rural areas are neglected to provide cheap labour for urban areas, much like the old pass laws were designed to do.

The ANC props up any leader who tows the line of international finance. Jacob Zuma is likely to be more adept than Thabo Mbeki at accepting the status quo.

Every child who finishes school must be given a job. The state must create jobs instead of just stuffing money into pockets of loyalists. Land redistribution is also part and parcel of this process.
