Fifty-nine babies were born at five public hospitals around Gauteng yesterday.
By lunch time yesterday, Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto had 26 newborn babies. Dr Raymond Billa said: "Twenty-two of the babies were born naturally and the other four were born by Caesarean section."
At George Mukhari Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, 14 babies were born.
Five babies were born at Johannesburg's General Hospital. Four were girls and one a boy.
By 2pm eight babies were born at Leratong Hospital on the West Rand and three more mothers-to-be were in labour waiting to pop any minute.
At Coronation Women and Children's Hospital, six babies were born.
