Feared, dangerous and on the run from police in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng, a 27-year-old alleged armed robber and murderer identified only as Chunky Chunky was arrested by the Etwatwa West police while travelling in a taxi from Springs to Daveyton yesterday.
The arrest was confirmed by spokesman for Etwatwa police Sergeant Ramothakhi Maqabe.
Local residents who spoke to Sowetan said they welcomed the man's arrest, and those who had a close shave with him described him as "a real devil with an angel's face".
Police said most of his victims came from Etwatwa East and West, Barcelona, Emaphupheni and the Bester and Citicon areas.
Maqabe also revealed that Chunky Chunky's first brush with the law was in March 2004 in Lady Grey, Eastern Cape, when he was arrested for murder and armed robbery.
"He later escaped from lawful custody and was a fugitive until he resurfaced here three years later," said Maqabe.
Police say some of the crimes Chunky Chunky committed while in Etwatwa included:
l An armed robbery in April this year;
l Attempted murder - also in April;
l House robbery in July; and
l Pointing of a firearm in October.
Maqabe further confirmed that 15 more serious cases were currently being investigated against the former fugitive.
He called on members of the public who had reported cases against him to come forward.
One of the arresting officers, Captain Rovictor Roberts, told Sowetan that when Chunky Chunky was arrested he "put up a helluva fight" despite his small physique.
"Luckily he was not armed, otherwise his arrest could have resulted in a blood bath. When he was finally subdued, he was found with strings smeared with muthi around his waist," Roberts said.
Meanwhile, Chunky Chunky, whose innocent face belies the alleged crimes he is said to have committed with impunity, has remained defiant to the end.
On Monday morning while being taken to Johannesburg for further investigation, he blurted out to one of the policemen guarding him: "Please, give me your gun so that I can shoot this white police officer," referring to Roberts.
