A Modimolle, Limpopo, man is expected to appear in the local magistrate's court today on a charge of abduction after he allegedly kept his 17-year-old "girlfriend" in his shack for two weeks.

The girl was reported missing to the SAPS family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit after she failed to return home on December 12. The incident happened at Phomolong extension in Modimolle.

According to Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba, the 20-year-old man allegedly met the girl in the street and went with her to his shack. The two could not be traced until the girl returned home on Christmas Day.

"When her parents wanted to know where she had been, she told them that she had been at her boyfriend's shack in Extension 8," Ledwaba said.

He said the victim's mother then opened a case of abduction and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

"We have an obligation to arrest or act against anyone who engages in a sexual relationship with a girl under 18 years of age because that is a criminal offence," Ledwaba said.

"We also view the abduction charge in a very serious light.

"We wish to urge parents to report any missing children to the police as soon as possible in order for us to respond timeously."
