The Limpopo department of roads and transport said yesterday it was hard at work to ensure that accidents, particularly those involving fatalities, were contained.
By yesterday the department had recorded the deaths of 125 people since the beginning of the festive season, most of them pedestrians.
"We are worried that people continue to lose their lives, especially pedestrians who must be very cautious when walking on the roads," said department spokesman Boiki Tsedu yesterday.
"We are saddened by the loss of lives on our roads. We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the departed and wish those who were injured a speedy recovery."
Tsedu said they remained convinced that the loss of lives was an indictment against road users who disregarded traffic laws.
"In the main the victims of road accidents are on the result of traffic rules violations such as speeding and driving under the influence of liquor.
"We call on all road users to help us make our roads safer during this festive season," Tsedu said.
He also urged passengers to refuse to be driven anywhere by drivers who were drunk. He gave this advice:
"We should manage our time in such a way that we do not have to speed to our destinations," Tsedu aid.
"In so doing we will have saved the valued lives of many road users and adhered to the Arrive Alive campaign."
