Tears of joy and cars hooting in parts of Limpopo characterised the mood of successful matriculants.
Limpopo, which last year produced dismally poor results, showed an improved performance this year.
The province came eighth after the Eastern Cape with a 58percent matric pass rate. A total of 105932 pupils sat for this year's exams and 75percent of the successful candidates passed with an S-symbol or a university entrance symbol.
Further good news is that the provincial education department's focus on maths and science is bearing fruit because this year Limpopo is the only province that has an increased pass rate in both subjects.
About 38percent of matriculants who wrote maths and science in the higher grade passed well. Most of these were from black schools in rural areas.
Mbilwi High School in the Vhembe district in Venda became the first black school in South Africa that qualified to join Club 100.
The club was launched by Education Minister Naledi Pandor. The school was this year moved into a new multimillion-rand building - an initiative of MEC Aaron Motsoaledi.
The best school award went to Mbilwi while the best student went to 17-year old Hoërskool Friekkie Meyer's Tanya Judy. The second and third place went to Serogole Mokganyetsi Goldean of SJ Van der Merwe and Takalani Phumudzo Livhuwane of Mbilwi High School.
Speaking on Friday after the results were made known, Motsoaledi said the province was ready to continue producing good results in maths and science; two more schools teaching maths and science were opened last year.
"We are going to open a further three schools early next year where maths and science subjects will be taught with precision."
Motsoaledi praised the schools and pupils that performed well this year .
