African Warriors, who are campaigning in the National First Division, scooped the yearly Mayoral Cup title at Warden Stadium in Free State over the Christmas weekend.

This was after they registered a 2-1 victory in a thrilling final against Mafube FC, who feature in the Vodacom League.

The one-day tournament, which involves four teams, is the brainchild of Moroka Swallows' captain Goodman Mazibuko.

Mazibuko said the aim of the one-day tournament was to entertain the community in Warden and surrounding rural areas by bringing professional football to their doorstep.

"It is also aimed at motivating the young ones to meet their favourite players and take football as a challenge in the future," said Mazibuko, who was born and bred in Warden.

The utility player thanked the Thabo Mafutsanyana municipality for donating trophies and medals.

Warriors walked away with a trophy, gold medals and a new kit while Mafube got a trophy and silver medals.

Last year's winners, Moroka Swallows' Under-19 team, had to be content with bronze medals.

The side coached by Joel "Ace'' Mnini embarrassed the locals, Sweet Harmony 4-1 in front of their vocal supporters to take third place.
