A man who allegedly burnt his ex-lover to death will be charged with murder, malicious damage to property and theft once he has been caught, said Soweto police yesterday.

"The man is still on the run but we are investigating the allegations against him," said police spokesman Captain Phillemon Khorombi.

Sthembile Manzini, a 37-year-old mother of two, was allegedly doused with petrol and set alight at the man's home in Zondi, Soweto, last week.

Manzini died at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital on Friday after suffering third- degree burns.

Manzini's friend, who did not want to be named, said t the two had argued on the morning of the incident over an SMS Manzini had received on her cellphone.

"It seems they wanted to get back together after he helped her recover a rental car she was using that had been hijacked," the friend said.

She claimed that Manzini's ex-boyfriend fled with her savings amounting to R75000.

Manzini's friends are still searching for her family, who are believed to be in KwaZulu- Natal, because they want to bury her.

"She spoke little about her family except for a sister, Tozo, who is a teacher in KwaZulu-Natal."
