Local municipalities in South Africa are using integrated development planning system to plan for future development and to offset the devastating negative effects of racially-skewed apartheid planning.

Through the integrated development plan, municipalities and citizens formulate solutions to achieve long-term development strategies.

Simply put, an integrated development plan is a super plan for an area that gives an overall framework for development.

It aims to coordinate the work of local and other spheres of government in a coherent plan to improve the quality of life for all.

The plan addresses economic and social development for the area, and must set a framework on how land should be used, what infrastructure and services are needed and how the environment should be protected. - Source www.etu.org.za
