Child labour

Despite vigorous union campaigns against child labour, the practice remains a social problem in some sectors, especially in the farming community.

Despite vigorous union campaigns against child labour, the practice remains a social problem in some sectors, especially in the farming community.

As in many countries across the world, the exploitation of children for economic purposes is outlawed in South Africa and those responsible face prosecution.

That this malpractice continues is an indictment of the Department of Labour, which ought to send a tough message to transgressors who ignore the law.

Sowetan published a report last week on the arrest of a North West farmer after the department's inspectors found 16 minors working on his farm in Schweizer-Reineke.

Child labour should be prioritised. The guilty must face the full force of the law, without the option of a fine.
