The big tree that provided the Mqoqi family with love and support has fallen.
Mbulelo "Naas" Mqoqi, 50, of Pimville, Soweto, died on December 16 after he was shot in the head.
He was in his other house in Ridgeway when the incident happened.
Mqoqi's family described him as a loving father, a reliable friend and an anchor around which the family gravitated.
"As his clan name suggests, he stood as a big tree that provided shade of comfort to his family and a place of serenity and tranquility in the face of hardship," said his daughter Zandile.
She said her father woke up from a week-long coma and immediately wanted to take on his daily responsibilities.
Zandile said before he was shot, his father would leave everything to attend to family matters.
"You just needed to make a call and he would be there to support you, no matter what you asked for," she said.
Mqoqi was a manager of his own security company and also had youth projects in and around Pimville.
"He loved to empower people. He viewed his work on giving skills as a way of giving back to the community," said his daughter.
He is survived by his parents, siblings and children. Mqoqi will be buried tomorrow at the Brakpan cemetery.
The service will be held at the Robertsham Methodist Church and proceedings will begin at 8am.
