Swimmers rescued

Fourteen people were rescued and one is in a critical condition after a near drowning at the Robberg Five beach in Plettenberg Bay, the National Sea Rescue Institute said yesterday.

Spokesman Craig Lambinon said all 14 were in the surf and experienced difficulties after a strong rip current on Wednesday.

The incident happened after two children were swept out to sea and several people went in to assist them.

"People appeared to be trying to help each other out of the surf rip currents of between 40 metres and 60 metres offshore," Lambinon said.

"Rescue swimmers and bystanders worked to pull swimmers to shore.

"Three men were taken to hospital, with one in a serious condition and two in a serious but stable condition." - Sapa
