The community of Mcitsheni, a rural area of Ezakheni near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, is puzzled and shocked after two unknown men entered the home of a 46-year-old woman in the area and raped her.

The incident apparently happened early yesterday morning. Nothing was taken from the house.

The woman said she was woken by the sound of people trying to gain entry to her house.

Police spokesman Ursula Cronje said: "The woman woke up and found two men in her bedroom. They jumped into her bed, raped her and left without saying a word. The woman lives alone. She does not know the men. They both left without taking anything."

Cronje said a massive search for the men had been launched.

Members of the community have also been urged to come forward with any information that might lead to the men's arrest.

l Cronje said that on the same morning, an 18-year-old boy from C-section in the Ezakheni township was shot by an unknown person. He is recovering in hospital.

The incident took place at 4am when an unknown person entered the boy's home and shot him in the upper leg.

Cronje said the motive for the shooting is unknown.
