Enterprising Free State Stars are in a festive mood to give their supporters a well-deserved Christmas gift in the form of a win over beleaguered Mamelodi Sundowns.
The two meet in an Absa Premiership match at Goble Park tomorrow at 3.30pm.
Yet another Downs loss could see the departure of coach Gordon Igesund.
Igesund has gone eight games without a win, a bad record for a coach with four championship medals with different clubs.
While some may feel Igesund has reached the ceiling at Chloorkop, there are those who believe that the players are equally to blame for the string of poor results.
The latest defeat was a 1-2 loss to Platinum Stars on Wednesday night, which is believed to have angered club president Patrice Motsepe.
Sowetan has learnt that there was a meeting after the game until just before midnight where Motsepe expressed his disappointment in their dismal performance
"While we sympathise with our brothers at Sundowns, we also have a job to do on Saturday," warned Duncan "The King" Lechesa, Stars' captain.
"Free State Stars are not a charity organisation. It will be our last 2007 match and we need to give something back to our supporters.
"It won't be an easy game, the last kicks of a dying horse are even more dangerous. We need to guard against complacency too, based on Sundowns' poor form."
Sundowns were reported to be in another lengthy meeting yesterday as part of their turnaround strategy after the concerns raised by Motsepe.
They could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
Igesund will keep his fingers crossed that Surprise Moriri, Peter Ndlovu and Shakes Ngwenya do not make their two-hour long trip back home a miserable one.
Besides Lechesa, Stars have other good players in Diyo Sibisi, Fanyana Dhladhla and Nigerian Prince Olomu to add to Downs' woes.
l In Johannesburg tonight (8pm), Bidvest Wits take on Moroka Swallows at Milpark Stadium where the focus will be on free-scoring Birds striker James Chamanga.
