A number of motorists have been arrested, fined or summonsed for different offences on Mpumalanga roads since last Saturday, the provincial roads and transport department said yesterday.
The department said its Arrive Alive campaign and visible policing have resulted in the arrest of 56 motorists for drinking and driving.

Mnyandu said: "We have issued a number of summonses to motorists who were found to be on the wrong side of the law.
"The summons pertained to unlicensed drivers, speeding, inconsi-derate driving and driving under the influence of alcohol," he said.
Mnyandu said other offences included poor tyre conditions, faulty lights, drivers not wearing seat belts, drivers without driver's licences, poor steering mechanisms and faulty vehicle brakes.
"This resulted in 1135 motorists being issued with fines," he said.
"Also, 165 summonses were issued to motorists caught driving unlicensed vehicles and at least 127 drivers were fined for driving without licences," Mnyandu said.
He said what was of a big concern was that 212 motorists were fined for speeding, which is viewed as a main cause of accidents.
"To show a zero tolerance in the fight against unroadworthy cars, 47 vehicles were taken off the road and 16 public transporters impounded because of minimal roadworthy conditions," Mnyandu said.
He warned that the intensified festive season Arrive Alive campaigns are in full force to remind road users about road safety.
"We want to send a clear message that we will be merciless to those who do not obey the rules of the road," he said.
