A Standard Bank ATM was blown up at Boipatong in the Vaal in an early dawn attack yesterday, but the robbers escaped empty-handed, thanks to swift police action.

The three armed robbers stormed a filling station where the ATM was located at about 1.30am.

Police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera said: "They forced three petrol attendants into a minibus which was parked at the filling station before placing explosives in the ATM."

He said the robbers then blew up the machine but were disturbed by the police patrolling nearby.

"The police were on patrol in the area when they heard an explosion," said Mcera.

On seeing the police the trio fled without taking any cash. Investigations are continuing. - Ntwaagae Seleka
