At least one woman was raped and a young man murdered yesterday in Mankweng, just outside Polokwane, where the ANC conference is being held since Sunday.

Mankweng police spokesman Inspector Malan Nchabeleng said the two incidents took place in Nobody, a few kilometres from Turfloop on Saturday night.

"In the first incident, a 17-year-old girl was repeatedly raped on Saturday at Mankweng near Mathibaskraal at 7pm.

The girl was on her way from Polokwane to Mankweng when she was attacked.

The man allegedly attacked her and dragged her into nearby bushes.

"The man then undressed the girl, raped her and vanished into the night," Nchabeleng said.

The victim opened a case of rape at Mankweng police station.

In the second incident, also in Mankweng yesterday, a 26-year-old man allegedly stabbed a friend to death during an argument.

The incident happened on a path in Nobody at about 8pm.

Police identified the suspect as Tumelo Emmanuel Semosa, 26, and the dead man as George Boy Mashele, 25.

The motive for the killing is not yet known but sources told Sowetan the two had argued over a girlfriend.

The suspect allegedly ran away after killing Mashele.

Police launched a massive manhunt with the aid of the community and later found the suspect at a relative's house.

He was arrested and charged with murder.

Speaking about crime in Mankweng since the ANC conference started, Nchabeleng said a total of 99 traffic offenders were arrested, 18 for gambling without authorisation, six for possession of drugs, six for housebreaking and 35 for trading in liquor without a licence.

In addition, a man was arrested yesterday for pointing a firearm at someone.

"We have declared Mankweng a gun-free zone and anyone who walks around with a gun is deemed dangerous and strong action shall be taken against him," Nchabeleng said.
