The battle for president of the ANC has indeed become an ugly mess. It has robbed the ANC of its moral high ground.

The battle for president of the ANC has indeed become an ugly mess. It has robbed the ANC of its moral high ground.

Thabo Mbeki, in the last years of his presidency, should not have sought re-election. He should have realised it was time for him to go as he has obviously lost popular support.

It is sad when a president has to endure insults - he does not deserve this. Mbeki has failed to get rid of an unpopular and unfit health minister for whatever reason. He is unwilling to give the nation a good reason why he removed Vusi Pikoli.

He has also failed with his Zimbabwe initiative.

Having said this, we must acknowledge that Mbeki has also presided over the country's most successful economic period. For this we surely owe him some respect and gratitude.

Then of course we have a great question mark over Jacob Zuma.

How could the majority of ANC branches, youth and women's leagues put him up as a candidate?

The ANC has clear guidelines and requirements for a future president.

A country needs a well-spoken, well-educated and morally-fit president.

Thabo Mbeki, it seems, is now past his sell-by date.
