Attempts to get rid of illegal firearms are paying off after the arrest of a man found in possession of a bag full of firearms, including home-made ones, in Nkandla, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The man was arrested by a crime intelligence unit, after a tip-off by informers.

The 36-year-old man, Bongani Ngonyama, appeared in the Nkandla magistrate's court yesterday.

Police, aided by the community, had gathered information that Ngonyama kept a number of illegal firearms at his homestead.

When police raided Ngonyama's home they found five firearms consisting of a 303 rifle, 9mm pistol, a 38 revolver, two home-made guns and 9mm ammunition.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said Ngonyama claimed the firearms had belonged to his late brother.

Naicker said it had not been established if the firearms really belonged to his late brother or whether Ngonyama was in the gun-running business.

"He will have to convince the court that the firearms really belonged to his late brother," he said.

Naicker said getting rid of illegal firearms was one of the crime intelligence unit's priorities since it was one of the ways of fighting crime in the communities.
