The Greater Johannesburg Regional Taxi Council has joined the Top Six Taxi Management in signing a memorandum of understanding at a weekend.
The City of Johannesburg has signed yet another ambitious initiative with two minibus taxi industries that would improve the public transport system.
Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo, Eric Motshwane, Chairman of the Greater Johannesburg Regional Taxi Council, and Sicelo Mabaso, Chairperson of the Top Six taxi group signed a memorandum of understanding in which they pledged to work together towards the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
The system was introduced two months ago.
Masondo said he and the taxi associations delegation visited the cities of Bogota and Pereira in Colombia to look at the bus rapid transit transport system called the TransMilenio (Transmilenia).
He said the visit was positive and the system was already working in cities like Brisbane, Boston, Beijing, Los Angeles and Jakarta.
Masondo said it was important for the City of Johannesburg to visit Colombia and identify the best system. It can adopt in manner that will suit the Johannesburg reality.
He said the most important feature of the Rea Vaya was that buses would travel along the dedicated median bus ways rather than kerbside.
"These bus ways will have a distinct colour surface to separate them from the lanes used by ordinary traffic," said Masondo.
