Johannesburg police arrested more than 150 people for different crimes at the weekend.

Most of them were arrested in the notorious suburb of Hillbrow, police said yesterday.

Police arrested 115 people on Saturday and by last night the number had risen to 164.

Police spokesman Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said the arrests were part of an effort to "sustain the accelerated crime combat within the Hillbrow police station".

He said police were building up to the new year celebrations, which always caused havoc in the area.

Those arrested will appear in court today.
