To reduce the number of road accidents between Gauteng and Limpopo this festive season, the South African Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (Salldta) will deploy 20 patrol vehicles on the N1 from Hamanskraal to Polokwane.
The initiative, which starts this week and continues until January 3 next year, aims to encourage taxi drivers to drive carefully.
The spokesman for the South African Local and Long Distance Taxi Association, Joe Modisha, said to reduce tension and bring about peace within the sector, various long distance taxi associations had agreed to take part in the campaign.
The associations would operate under the auspices of the United Long Distance Taxi Association (Uldta) from now until after New Year's Day.
Modisha said all the associations would deploy their members and patrol vehicles.
He said the vehicles would be fitted with Uldta stickers for easy identification.
He said to ensure good coordination, a call centre had been set up at Mookgopong. Taxi drivers who faced problems were free to contact the centre for help.
Modisha advised the drivers to adhere to the minimum speed limit to avoid unnecessary fines.
"Taxi drivers who fail to pay their traffic fines will face the full might of the law and may also be arrested," Modisha warned.
