A 30-year-old man will appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate's court today for the murder of another man at a tavern on Saturday.

A fight between two groups over an unlicensed gun ended with one of the men being stabbed to death and another fighting for his life at a local hospital after he was shot and wounded. The incident happened outside the tavern when one man tried to take a gun away from its owner.

During the fight the owner fired at the man who was trying to wrest the gun from him. Police spokesman Henry Budhram said the incident happened at about 5am.

Police called to the scene found that the alleged owner of the gun had been stabbed to death while the other had been wounded.

The man alleged to have stabbed the gun owner to death was arrested and charged with murder.

The deceased cannot be named until his next-of-kin are found.

l In another incident a KwaZulu-Natal man, believed to have belonged to a group of robbers who shot and wounded a policeman at the Pavilion shopping mall a month ago, was shot and killed by police at his home in Malvern, south of Durban.

On Saturday the Durban organised crime unit, acting on information received, stormed in at the man's place shortly after midnight.
