The Mpumalanga department of health and social services yesterday announced that there was a diarrhoea outbreak in Standerton in the Lekwa municipality - the second outbreak this year .

The department said the outbreak started in the second week of this month.

Mpho Gabashane, the department's spokesman, said: "We have since activated our medical joint operations committee, which has already put in place a plan of action to monitor the situation.

"To date, we have 134 confirmed cases since the outbreak started, while 48 people have been hospitalised both in public and private hospitals.

"However, this number may be more as there are still unconfirmed cases from private medical doctors in the area," Gabashane said.
