Fifteen Tunisian doctors recruited early this year to work in different public hospitals across the country are expected to arrive in South Africa on Monday.

The Department of Health confirmed that 14 of the doctors will be assigned to the rural facilities of the Eastern Cape while one will be posted to the Free State. Free State has already received two Tunisian doctors who were assigned at the beginning of this month.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said the recruitment of doctors from Tunisia was one of the short-term measures taken by the department to address the challenge of inadequate supply of doctors in South Africa.

"More doctors are expected to arrive in the country as logistical arrangements are fine-tuned," said Tshabalala-Msimang.
